Toady, I want to show you a script. This script has 4 different commands you can use to free up the memory in 4 different ways using the command prompt. Ill also show you how to create a shortcut for these commands so that you can easily run these commands with a double click.

Empty standby list

Empty Standby List is a small command line application that you can work with for free up memory on Windows Vista and higher. Download and paste it in the command line root path. Or set the root path where the EmptyStandByList.exe file is. You must keep it in the C drive [system drive] of your system.

Now there are 4 commands you can run with this command line application. Lets take a look at them.

EmptyStandbyList.exe working sets

This command clears the memory used by all currently running applications and processes. This command is most commonly used by memory optimization software.

There is a downside to using this command. The Windows system will try to quickly exchange the data from the paging file. So it will make use of your storage disk to retrieve the information from the programs and thereby lower the overall performance. But it will certainly be free up memory.

EmptyStandbyList.exe modified page list

Here are modified page files that are content that must be written to the storage disk before they can be used again. If you see in the Memory section of the Resouce Monitor, you will find a Modified for Memory section in the display.

So if you want to clear such memory, you have to use this command.

EmptyStandbyList.exe priority0standbylist

Now, here the standby memory has the content that is held by the memory and not in use. But will be used when needed. As seen in the screenshot above, you can see the Standby Memory section.

The above command clears the contents of the standby memory with the lowest priority. You can set the priority by replacing the 0 in the command with a number from 1-7. 7 is the highest priority.

EmptyStandbyList.exe standbylist

And this last command clears the standby memory regardless of the priority of the content. She knew it all.

Create command shortcuts

To create a shortcut from a cmd command, right-click on your desktop and select New> Shortcut. Now add the following string in the location field.

C: WindowsSystem32cmd.exe / c command

Replace the command in the string with one of the commands you want to run. Then you are going to give this shortcut administrator rights to work. Because these commands need admin access. Weve told you how to do that in this article.

Are you still using DDR2 or DDR3 RAM? You must now opt for a DDR4 RAM. Weve explained why here.

GUI alternative?

If you are not a command line enthusiast and prefer to perform this task with a GUI, you should use SysInternals RAM directory. It works much the same, with some extra control available.
