An example of a top down project in India is the building of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River. The government built the dam to:
- Encourage development by providing drinking water and electricity [HEP] to cities. This would also reduce dehydration in droughts.
- Open up dry lands for farming using irrigation to feed a growing population.
- Store monsoon rains to use during the dry season.
People have a reliable source of water throughout the year | Locals had their land flooded to create the reservoir. This included religious and historic sites. |
Electricity generated by HEP | Few villages can afford the electricity generated by the dam so only the cities benefit. |
Farmers can use water from the dam for irrigation to increase crop yields |
