PROJECT TYPE Mosaic Table (Direct Method) MATERIALS

• Mosaic tiles
• Table
• Adhesive - Cement based adhesive. Dunlop brand manufacture an adhesive called ‘Tile All’ which is available from Bunnings and suitable for this project. It is a two-part adhesive that needs to be mixed immediately before use.
• Grout – Standard kitchen & bathroom grout which can be purchased from a hardware or tiling store. You can purchase pre-mixed grouts or colour your own with grout colourants. Grey is considered the safest option in terms of grout colour. Adding a grout additive (recommended) will improve the flexibility of the grout; this can also be purchased from Bunnings or a tiling store. TOOLS
• Mixing adhesive – Container & implement for mixing
• Applying adhesive – Paint brush or palette knife
• Grouting – Container for mixing grout, implement for mixing grout, container for water, sponge or cloth, gloves INSTRUCTIONS

(Note: Some of these steps may not be necessary in your project)

1. Seal your table. Apply 3-4 coats of sealer, allowing between coats for drying. Grout additives also double as sealers, which can save you money.
2. Plan your design & transfer onto your base. The outline of the design is adequate for making a mosaic.
3. Pre-cut mosaic tiles
4. Spread adhesive onto mosaic base with either a paint brush or palette knife. If using the cement based adhesive you need to create a bed of adhesive which the tiles are then stuck into. Apply adhesive in small sections as if the adhesive dries out it will need to be removed and reapplied.
5. Place mosaic tiles into the adhesive
6. Allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours prior to grouting
7. Remove any excess adhesive from the top of the tiles. Any adhesive level with the tiles will show through the grout so it needs to be removed. A sharp thin implement will be required (note: we stock repositioning tools which work well for this task).
8. Grout the mosaic, see the ‘Beginners Guide to Grouting'. We recommend adding grout additive to the grout in a ratio to water of 50/50.
