Genocide refers to the deliberate, systematic annihilation of an entire nation or people. ex. Holocaust.

Segregation refers to the physical separation of two groups in residence, workplace, and social functions. Ex. between 1890 and 1910, a series of U.S. laws, known as Jim Crow laws, were enacted to separate blacks and whites by prohibiting blacks from using "white" buses, hotels, restaurants, etc.

Acculturation refers to adopting the culture of a group different from the one in which a person was originally raised. Ex is to learn the dominant language, values, and behaviors of a particular culture. Some forms of acculturation can be forced

Pluralism refers to a state in which racial and ethnic groups maintain their distinctness but respect each other and have equal access to social resources. Ex. In Switzerland, 4 ethnic groups live among each other and still maintain their respective cultures.

Assimilation is the process by which formerly distinct and separate groups merge and become integrated as one. Primary assimilation is when groups merge together as family, friends, and spouses. Secondary assimilation is when groups merge together such as neighbors, schools, work places.
