Asus laptop processor upgrade

Hi, I have an ASUS laptop that is currently supporting an intel core i3 processor, and i was just wondering if it would be possible to upgrade it to a better processor, and if it would actually be worth it for the performance of my laptop. My laptop model is atheros/ar5b125 and is made by ASUS I would appreciate any answers and also, if anyone could mention, if at all, what the highest processor my laptop could support would be?

Thanks a lot

Probably the best way to increase performance on a Laptop [not for gaming] is to swap out the HDD for an SSD. No you cannot just replace your laptop processor. Also Chrome OS i very light and very fast for general laptop use.

No. The Intel® Core™ i3 3217U in your laptop is soldered in place with a BGA socket. In general, laptops have a very tight thermal and power envelope so any change to CPU is likely to exceed what the system is designed to handle.

If the video I found is the model you have then I would say the CPU is not upgradable or it is not easily upgradable. The CPU is soldered onto the motherboard like most laptops today. It’s extremely rare to find a laptop where the CPU or GPU can be upgraded. If your computer is acting slow then a good upgrade I can recommend is an SSD or to clean the computer of dust and derby. Having at least 8Gb of RAM is a must but having 16Gb is better. Good luck!

Hello, I recently bought a new laptop, ASUS K501UW And I want to replace the existing cpu, which is a intel core i7 6500U, 2cores, 4 threads to a intel core i7 3610QM, 4 cores, 8threads. I have checked the benchmarks and its not much of a difference so the laptop could handle it, but is it possible? I'm still confused about the motherboard and such.

Any help appreciated!

Absolutely not. Even if you could swap out the CPU, which may or may not be possible on your laptop [I think not, the 6500U will probably be soldered onto your motherboard], they're chips from completely different generations. The 6500U is Skylake, the 3610QM is Ivybridge.

Nope. If memory serves, ALL "U" series processors are soldered to the motherboard. Not to mention what gopher1369 said about the two being completely different generations.

Is it not possible to unsolder the original cpu and solder back the other/ a cpu socket? If i have a a cpu socket from that generation it should be fine? Perhaps i could ask a professional to do it if it's to risky?

I guess hypothetically it's possible. I found this on YouTube, for example: https

But you already have the fastest processor, I think, i7s are the top end chip, there isn't anything faster to upgrade to.

Well, my third generation intel i7 has 4 cores, which makes it more suitable for certain activities like gaming. The 6th generation i7 I have only has 2 cores, which is not enough.

No both CPUs have different number of pins and they will also be aligned differently. If you want a laptop with a quad core CPU, then I recommend you return the Asus and look for different laptop. An example of a laptop with a quad core i5-6300HQ and GTX 960m that is around the same weight as the Asus would be the Dell XPS 15. But it starts at $1,200.

Your new laptop is an ultra low voltage laptop [CPU limited to 15 Watts]. The U on the end of the 6500U = ULV. There are no quad core ULV processors.

Your old laptop was a regular voltage 45 Watt mobile part.
