How to Turn on an HP Laptop

The only real way to turn on most HP laptops is by pressing the power button. If your laptop is in sleep mode, you may just be able to open the lid, but if its powered down, then youll need to press the power button.

Depending on which HP laptop you have, the power button will be located in slightly different places. Some have it on the side, others on one of the corners on the back, while others still have it located just above the keyboard on the bottom half of the laptop.

What Do I Do If My HP Laptop Wont Turn On?

If you press the power button and your HP laptop doesnt turn on, it may not be broken. There are a number of steps you can take to try to fix the problem.

1. Plug in its charger and try to turn on the HP laptop again. It may be that it was just out of battery. If the laptop turns on, but wont stay on when the power cable isnt plugged in, you may have a faulty battery.

2. Make sure youre using the right charger. Many laptop chargers look the same. If you can, try using a different one, or a different USB-C cable, if possible.

3. Double check that the screen isnt just turned off. Do you hear the fan spin up? Try turning up the brightness on the main screen, or checking any external displays to see if theyre showing the laptop running. Try plugging in an external monitor to see if that gets you a picture.

4. Remove any external drives, media, or accessories, and disconnect the laptop from any docking station, adapter, or hub. Sometimes external devices can cause errors which block a laptop from booting up. Once everything is unplugged [except for power], try again to turn it on.

5. Try a hard restart: remove the charger and battery [if you can], then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. This will drain any residual charge from the laptop.

6. If you get specific beeps when you try to start the laptop, those are POST codes which can give you a clue as to whats wrong.

7. Check that the vents are clear from dust and that the laptop hasnt overheated. If your HP laptop gets too hot, it may shut down and refuse to boot to protect its components. Use compressed air to clean out any dust build up if its a problem.

If none of the above works, youll need to try taking the laptop in for repair. If its under warranty, consider taking it back to the retailer, or HP, otherwise find a well-reviewed and qualified repair shop.
