The chainsmokers billboard music award for top collaboration

The Chainsmokers came out on top at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, with the EDM duo winning Top Hot 100 Song and Top Collaboration for their hit “Closer” with Halsey. The single topped the charts worldwide, furthering the group’s success, and also took home the award for Top Dance/Electronic Song.

The BBMA’s take the year’s chart-toppers from the United States Billboard music chart and then fans vote on which artist or track wins in each category, broken down by genre. Thus, The Chainsmokers’ big wins this weekend proved their mainstream appeal, both a factor in their popularity and for criticism from purists within the EDM genre.

Interestingly, they lost twice in the category for Top Dance/Electronic Album, with their sophomore album ‘Bouquet’ and new album ‘Collage’ losing to Lindsey Stirling‘s ‘Brave Enough’. The YouTube star, famous for mixing electronica with her violin playing, featured a collaboration with Zedd on her album. However, Stirling lost to The Chainsmokers in the Top Dance/Electronic Artist bracket, alongside fellow nominees Calvin Harris, Major Lazer and DJ Snake.

Other dance songs that won at the BBMAs include pop superstar Justin Timberlake‘s worldwide hit “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from the Trolls soundtrack, which blended disco and soul and pop to an undeniably catchy effect. Dance music’s inescapable influence on the pop landscape was more than apparent by the nominees of Top Radio Songs, which included only dance-pop songs as nominees. Sia, Drake, and again the two Chainsmokers’ tracks, lost to Timberlake.

The Chainsmokers’ performed at the ceremony, choosing to showcase their new single “Young.” Nicki Minaj brought out frequent collaborator and creative partner David Guetta for a showstopping opening performance of “Light My Body Up.” Cher’s performance was not just about her much-discussed outfit, or lack thereof, but reminded listeners of “Believe‘s” status as one of the greatest dance tracks of the last few decades.

Earlier in the evening, the duo won top collaboration for “Closer” featuring Halsey. “We love you all. We are so grateful for this,” Taggart said in his acceptance speech.

The Billboard Music Awards aired live at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT Sunday on ABC from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Vanessa Hudgens and Ludacris hosted. Keep up with all the latest news here.

Avicii, the beloved Swedish DJ and producer, was honored at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night by The Chainsmokers and Halsey.

Before presenting the award for Top Hot 100 Song of 2018 to Luis Fonsi for “Despacito,” the Chainsmokers’ Alex Pall and Drew Taggart told the thousands gathered at Las Vegas’ Grand Garden Arena that Avicii was “an artist who inspired so many in so many ways and meant so much to us and the EDM community.”

Added Halsey: “Everyone who worked with him would say that he was such a joy and that makes this tragedy all the more painful. It’s a reminder to all of us to be there and support and love our friends and family members who may be struggling with mental illness.”

The duo later mentioned Avicii a second time when picking up the award for Top Dance/Electronic act. Said Taggart: “We wanna dedicate this award to Avicii. … He is someone who made us believe that this is something we could do with our lives. Inspired all of us. Influenced our music and influence pop music in general. He will be missed and I hope he’s found peace.”

Avicii died on April 20 at the age of 28. His family later revealed that he took his own life. Unreleased music by Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling, may still be released, according to the president of the late star’s label, Geffen Records.

At the top of the show, BBMAs host Kelly Clarkson took an opportunity to remember Friday’s school shooting in Texas. Said “The Voice” coach: “I’m so sick of moments of silence — why don’t we do a moment of change? Why don’t we change what’s happening?”

Of course, The Chainsmokers still have millions of global listeners that don't need any convincing.
