From where does regal marine derive its ideas for new product to be developed?


Capture fisheries are constituted through historically specific environmental conditions and social and economic relations of production. Fisheries, whether saltwater or freshwater, are an important source of animal protein, livelihoods and exchange value in international trade, and are presently undergoing rapid socio-ecological change. To explore the political economy and ecology of capture fisheries around the world, this paper synthesizes the insights of 11 empirical studies and places fisheries in the broader context of the capitalist relations of production through which they operate. The competitive market dynamics of fisheries production and consumption are examined, as well as the forms of social-property relations, social differentiation, labour exploitation and resistance that occur within them. This paper highlights some of the ways in which the unique combination of characteristics associated with fish and fisheries complement and complicate familiar questions in agrarian political economy. It concludes by identifying future research directions.

Yacht design from an industrial design perspective, is about understanding the needs of the consumers. Designers must examine the contemporary understanding of the term ‘luxury’ in design from the perspective of the consumer. There is an increase in consumers wanting design functionality and usability as well as products that elicit other feelings such as luxury and pleasure. Emotional design involves developing an understanding of consumer characteristics, expectations, desires and needs, and translating them into sensitive and balanced design solutions. This paper presents a number of design case studies, which applied a methodology framework for emotional design, to a 40ft sailing yacht for a range of European personas. Coventry University Industrial Design students carried out this case study as part of EBDIG (European Boat Design Innovation Group) a European Union Leonardo funded research project, with the objective of developing training material for the European marine industry. The design output presented, demonstrates an emotional design framework, enabling luxury to be elucidated visually in a cultural context, as a tool to inform the interior design process for a specific persona. The students explained the significance of colour and form, and the rationale for the design detail. As case studies, these will help European design consultancies gain an appreciation of the value of Emotional Design to the yacht industry.

Industrial Design is the fusion of applied art and applied science to improve the aesthetics, human factors, functionality and usability of a product or system. The objective of Industrial Design is to study both function and form, and the connection between product, the user and the operational environment. The role of an Industrial Designer is to create and execute design solutions for problems of form, usability and human factors. Although the design process may be considered 'creative', it has a structured workflow involving many analytical processes, and is generally executed by an interdisciplinary team. Many industrial designers use various design methodologies in their creative process such as User Centred Design, Emotional Design and Design-Driven Innovation. Recent research has indicated that current wind farm support vessels will not be appropriate for accessing far shore wind farms. In order to improve operability of WFSV accessing the far shore wind farms, mothership vessels will be required. Extrapolating the European Wind Energy Association's (EWEA) growth scenario for the period up till 2030 employment in the installation, operation and maintenance, of offshore wind farms is expected to produce skilled employment of 851,400. To meet this demand it will be necessary to recruit land based technicians. Therefore, next generation motherships will need to address the user needs and aspirations of a new generation of technicians, who may not have previous marine experience. This paper presents several mothership concept design proposals, that challenge perceptions of the working and living environment on commercial vessels by using Design-Driven Innovation to create next generation vessels.

This allows them to expedite the design process as they don’t have to do extensive research to develop a design. Since customer preferences are actively changing design changes, materials and technologies also changing along with it and Regal Marine must act fast and efficient to stay ahead of the competition.

Regal Marine must remain creative and fresh with its product line and to stay competitive the company looks for feedback from customers and industry experts to deliver the most innovative products. This allows the company to stay ahead of its competitors by knowing exactly what their consumer base wants. They also use CAD technology which saves time and money and allows the design team to create products at a faster rate which is necessary in an industry where consumers want the most updated and state of the art products. Being able produce the boats at a quicker pace which gives them a competitive edge.
