Liverpool in the United Kingdom will be hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The English city was chosen over Glasgow in Scotland in what the European Broadcasting Union describes as a close fight.

This will mean next year's Contest will be held at the Liverpool Arena near the River Mersey, with the Contest dates on May 9 and 11, 2023 for the semifinals and the grand final for May 13, 2023.

"Liverpool is the ideal place to host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine," stated Contest supervisor Martin Österdahl on the contest's website.

"The city is synonymous with music and Liverpool Arena exceeds all the requirements needed to stage a global event of this scale. We have been very impressed with the passion the city has shown in embracing the Contest and their inclusive ideas for placing [2022] winners, Ukraine, front and center when thousands of fans visit next May."

The Ukrainian broadcaster, UA:PBC, had welcomed the development in a statement and cited that the city of Liverpool being a sister city of Odesa in Ukraine.

"It is symbolic that the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Liverpool, a twin city of Odesa," said Mykola Chernotytskyi, who is the head of the network's managing board. "The organization of a contest of this level sets super demanding requirements. I am confident that the city recognized as the capital of pop music will meet them in the best way and will deliver the celebration of music that will amaze both delegations and fans of Eurovision."

Ukraine would have hosted the contest for the third time, after hosting in its capital, Kyiv in 2005 and 2017.

The BBC had also congratulated the English city's choice, which is known as the World Capital of Pop.

"Congratulations to Liverpool. They will be an amazing host for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. Liverpool is such an exciting, warm and vibrant city," BBC Director General Tim Davie said in a statement, "It's the undisputed capital of pop music and is celebrating the 65th anniversary of its twinning with the Ukrainian city of Odesa. I know the people of Liverpool will welcome Europe — and the rest of the world — with open arms, and in partnership we will create something truly special."

The logo for next year's contest will feature the Ukrainian flag, as it was Ukraine who won the 2022 contest in Italy in May. Traditionally, the host country's flag would be the logo of the annual contest.

Liverpool now joins a roster of UK cities that have hosted this annual contest, alongside London, Edinburgh, Brighton, Harrogate, and Birmingham, which was shortlisted for next year's show. It also is the ninth time the UK hosted the contest, having hosted in 1960, 1963, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1977, 1982, and 1998.

In addition, this is the fifth time that the UK stepped in for a country that was unable to host the following year's edition after winning the previous contest.
